As company press celebrating the plant’s fifteenth anniversary noted, “Together with our Mis- sissippi friends and neighbors, we began a journey to turn an open field outside Canton into one of the most advanced manu- facturing facilities in the world.” The Nissan Canton plant almost instantly transformed Mississippi into a hub for world-class auto- motive manufacturing, assem- bling more than four million Nis- san cars and trucks since opening its doors on May 27, 2003. The plant has also created more than 6,500 jobs for team members and more than 25,000 direct and indi- rect jobs statewide. Recently, changes in market demand caused Nissan officials to make the decision to adjust production capacity at the Can- ton manufacturing facility to al- Special to The Canton News low the company to continue to maintain healthy inventory lev- els. As part of the adjustment, the plant’s truck line will move from a three-shift to a two-shift oper- ating pattern, while the van line moves from a two-shift to a one- shift operating pattern. While af- fected Nissan employees will be fully retained and redeployed to other areas of the plant, company officials anticipate that there will be up to 700 associates (contract labor) who will remain unas- signed. As part of this adjustment, Nissan plans to offer voluntary separation packages to certain employees of the Canton plant, age fifty-five and older. Through hand-raisers for this program, as well as natural attrition, Nis- san anticipates that the estimated 700 impacted associates could be lower. The earliest release date for unassigned associates will be March 18, 2019. Officials say the long-term out- look for the Canton plant re- mains strong, with production of the all-new Altima and planned investment for the next-genera- tion Frontier. They also plan to continue to produce the Murano, Frontier, TITAN and TITAN XD, and the NV Cargo and NV Pas- senger vans. In North America, Nissan’s operations include automotive styling, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. Nissan is a glob- al full-line vehicle manufacturer that sells more than sixty models under the Nissan, INFINITI and Datsun brands. Nissan has also partnered with French manufac- turer Renault since 1999 and ac- quired a 34% stake in Mitsubishi Motors in 2016. Renault-Nis- san-Mitsubishi is today the world’s largest automotive part- nership, with combined sales of more than 10.6 million vehicles in calendar year 2017.
