Special to The Canton News
Students in Coach Moseley’s Advanced Biology class at Canton Academy recently put their scientific skills to the test during the Biological Buffers Lab, a hands-on experiment designed to reinforce classroom learning.
During the lab, students explored the properties of acids, bases and buffers by testing the pH levels of several substances, including Alka-Seltzer, egg whites and liver. Using pH indicators, they measured how acidic or basic each sample was before introducing hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide to observe the changes.
The experiment allowed students to see firsthand how different substances resist or respond to shifts in pH, an important concept in biology and chemistry. By directly comparing the effects of strong acids and bases, students gained a deeper understanding of how living organisms use buffers to maintain balance.
The Lady Panther scientists will complete the project by writing detailed lab reports. In addition to reinforcing the scientific method, the assignment is designed to strengthen critical thinking and writing skills that will aid them as they prepare for the ACT.
Hands-on activities like this one are a key part of Canton Academy’s Advanced Biology program, giving students the opportunity to apply what they learn while preparing for future academic challenges.
