The large dome atop a local building, measuring twenty feet in diameter and thirty feet high, has twice faced threats of removal for security reasons, according to the Canton-Madison County Historic Society.
The first removal attempt occurred during the structure’s original construction in 1856, and the second during remodeling efforts in 1925. In both instances, women in the town successfully protected the dome by insisting that “beauty prevail over reason.”
