Credit Cards: How to Use Them Without Regret

Credit Cards: How to Use Them Without Regret

Good credit starts with good habits.

Credit cards can be powerful financial tools—but only if you use them wisely. Whether you’re new to credit or just trying to build better habits, here’s how to stay in control and make your card work for you.

Pay More Than the Minimum

Ideally, pay your full balance every month to avoid interest. But if that’s not possible, always pay more than the minimum. It shortens your payoff time and saves you money.

Keep Your Usage Low

Try to keep your credit utilization (how much of your limit you’re using) below 30%. High balances can hurt your credit score—even if you’re paying on time.

Watch for Fraud

Make it a habit to check your statements. Spot something weird? Report it immediately. Catching fraud early can save you serious headaches.

Know the Fine Print

Interest rates, annual fees, late fees, rewards—know what you’re signing up for. The more you understand your card, the better decisions you’ll make.

Check your Rate

It’s likely your credit card has some pretty high rates. That’s not a problem if you pay it off in full every month, before the due date. But if you don’t, it could be costing you some ka-ching. Veritas has a VISA Balance Transfer promotion right now to give 2% CashBack on Balance Transfers. What’s sweet about a VFCU VISA is that our low, fixed rate hasn’t changed since before 2013! Bring one credit card statement or a whole handful (we won’t judge) and let’s get you to a place where you can pay those balances off. Don’t want a credit card? We can also provide a consolidation loan to get all those high variable rates onto something fixed.

Your Smart Card Checklist:

  1. Pay off what you can—full balance if possible.
  2. Keep your spending under 30% of your limit.
  3. Monitor for fraud.
  4. Read the terms (yes, even the fine print!).

The Bottom Line:

Credit cards can help you build strong credit—or create stress. It’s all about how you use them. And if you’re unsure about the best credit card strategy? We’re here to walk through it with you. Learn more or connect with us at veritasfcu.org.
