Special to The Canton News
The Canton-Madison County Historical Society (CMCHS) recently received an original painting from Susan M. Kennedy of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and Canton. The painting, “Sunrise on the New Snow” c. 1983, was created by noted Mississippi artist Alfred Nicols, and Kennedy donated it from her private collection to the CMCHS.
According to the CMCHS, artistically inclined since childhood, Susan has long maintained a passion for art and creativity throughout her life. Since retiring from teaching first grade in 2013, she has devoted more time to her artwork and is also known locally through her participation in the Canton Flea Market.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nicols’ work has long been recognized across Mississippi and beyond, with paintings selected for the Washington offices of both Senator Trent Lott and Senator Roger Wicker.
A December 23, 1982, edition of the Madison County Herald even featured Nicols under the headline, “Behind The Judge Works An Artist.”
According to southernlandscapeart.com, Nicols’ paintings can also be found in the collections of the Mississippi Supreme Court, The University of Mississippi, Mississippi College School of Law, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Mississippi Public Television, Entergy, Trustmark, Regions Bank, and numerous other institutions, businesses and private collections throughout the South.
