The Hinds Community College Board of Trustees recently recognized Canton resident Terri Shores Black with Emeritus status, honoring her decades of distinguished service and lasting contributions to the college.

Black, who retired in 2015 but continues to teach part-time in kinesiology, has dedicated nearly forty-four years of service to Hinds Community College. Throughout her career, she made a lasting impact both in the classroom and in athletics, serving as a coach for basketball, tennis and softball while also leading as department chair for Health and Physical Education on two occasions.

In recognition of her contributions to athletics and education, Black was inducted into the Hinds Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2021. The following year, she earned induction into the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame, where she currently serves on the executive committee.

As part of the recent recognition from Hinds, Black was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus of Physical Education, an honor reserved for retired faculty members and professionals who have demonstrated exceptional service and excellence throughout their careers.

Hinds Community College established its Emeritus Status recognition program in 2004 to honor retired faculty and non-teaching professionals who have served the institution with distinction. To qualify, individuals must have a minimum of thirty years in education, including at least fifteen years of honorable and distinguished service to Hinds Community College.

Officials say Black’s recognition highlights a career marked by leadership, dedication and a commitment to helping students succeed.
