Canton residents will join communities across the nation in observing Constitution Week from Sept. 17-23, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution and reflecting on the freedoms established by the nation’s founding document.
Constitution Week begins each year on Sept. 17, Constitution Day, marking the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution in Philadelphia in 1787.
In Canton, the annual observance includes a Constitution Week display placed in the window of a business on the historic Canton Square. The display serves as a visible reminder of the Constitution and the principles and freedoms it represents.
The Doaks Treaty Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution encourages residents to reflect on the responsibilities of citizenship and to remember the men and women who serve our nation and protect its freedoms.
In the spirit of 1 Timothy 2:1-2, residents are encouraged to pray for the nation, its leaders and the military service members who protect the country, asking God to grant them wisdom, strength and protection.
Constitution Week was established nationally in 1956 after Congress passed a resolution designating Sept. 17-23 for the annual observance. The commemoration is intended to encourage Americans to learn more about the Constitution, recognize the responsibilities of citizenship and appreciate the rights and freedoms it protects.
For Canton, the annual display on the Square provides a local connection to the national observance and an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to reflect on the document that has helped guide the United States for more than two centuries.
