Students in the Canton Career Center’s Health Science class recently welcomed two healthcare professionals from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Megan Bass-Kendrick, a certified registered nurse anesthetist who holds a Ph.D., and Megan Harris, a registered nurse and critical care unit manager, spoke with first-year Health Science students about their careers and the skills needed to succeed in the healthcare field.
The professionals emphasized the importance of medical terminology, strong academic performance and effective communication. They also discussed essential workplace skills, including professionalism, teamwork, dependability, time management, empathy and maintaining a positive attitude.
Students learned about a variety of healthcare career opportunities and were offered job-shadowing opportunities to gain firsthand experience in medical settings.
One of the presentation’s key messages was the importance of learning to “pivot.” Bass-Kendrick and Harris encouraged students to view setbacks as opportunities to adjust their plans rather than reasons to abandon their goals.
They emphasized that success requires effort, consistency, commitment and perseverance and encouraged students to continue moving forward when challenges arise.
The Canton Career Center expressed appreciation to Bass-Kendrick and Harris for taking time to educate and encourage students and provide insight into careers in healthcare.
