The Canton Mayor and Board of Aldermen addressed municipal health insurance, public school funding, rental housing regulations, infrastructure projects and a film production agreement during regular meetings on September 1 and September 15 at Canton City Hall. Led by Mayor Tim C. Taylor, the Board handled agendas covering routine financial approvals, equipment acquisitions, departmental personnel matters and interlocal cooperation agreements.
During the September 1 meeting, officials accepted a resolution approving the millage rate and budget request of $30,829,285.59 for the Canton Public School District’s 2026-27 fiscal year. The City selected United Health Care with PreMed Option 1 as its health insurance provider and ratified the employment agreement for the City attorney. Aldermen also passed an amended ordinance setting registration requirements, administrative regulations, enforcement penalties and standards for rental housing units within Canton.
In public safety and administrative actions on September 1, the Board accepted fire equipment purchased by the Fire District, including an all-terrain vehicle, trailer and fire skid. The City authorized a contract with Application Data Systems Inc. to provide Police Department services featuring a $5,500 setup fee and $4,045 monthly service fee. Additional actions included purchasing $17,990 in mobile shelving from Nationwide Shelving for Court Service, reimbursing a $100 pavilion rental deposit to Jaleesa Seals, approving a letter to Commissioner Simmons regarding blocks on Adline Street, and designating City officials under the MOSTF program.
The Board approved several consent items on September 1, including an in-kind donation of the Multipurpose Complex for an October 15 meeting of the Mississippi State University Extension and Mississippi Homemakers Volunteers Inc.. Travel was authorized for Dr. Chuconna Anderson to attend the Fall Municipal Clerk Conference in Natchez from October 28 through October 30, as well as conference travel to Flowood from December 9 through December 11 for Anderson, Tiffany Anthony, Kajwana Davis and Ladrena Wise. Executive session discussions covered land transactions, three litigation matters, and individual personnel matters across the Fire, Public Works, Landfill and Police departments.
At the September 15 meeting, the Mayor and Board considered preliminary plans for Waggoner Engineering’s Draft Task Order No. 33 to study land use and infrastructure in the South Canton Parkway Growth Area, with final approval scheduled for October 6. The City approved Task Order No. 34 with Waggoner Engineering for strategic services and funding assistance at an hourly rate not to exceed $125,000. Officials also approved a final pay request to R&C Services for drainage repairs on Adeline Street and Johnson Street, along with a resolution declaring a retention pond in the Jody Drive vicinity a threat to public health and well-being.
Interlocal and community actions on September 15 included approving a cooperation agreement with Madison County to pave a portion of North Old Canton Road from Yandell Road to Highway 51 using County term bid contractors. The Board authorized the use of the Community Center for a movie production from September 28 through December 4 at a rate of $1,000 per day. A public hearing was held, and the Board entered executive session to discuss three litigation items, three business relocation or expansion matters, six Police Department personnel issues and two Landfill Department personnel matters.
