The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) held a professional development session to share updates and outline next steps for writing instruction for administrators and teachers in the Canton Public School District. The session included a comprehensive overview of the changes being implemented in writing assessments to help educators prepare for new standards.
MDE shared essential resources to support teachers in this transition, including sample writing responses that exemplify expected student outcomes, detailed rubrics for evaluating student work, and grade-level writing checklists that outline criteria for successful writing at each grade. These resources are designed to standardize writing instruction and assessment across the district.
Canton Public School District leadership emphasized the importance of keeping all staff informed about adjustments to the writing assessment process. They noted that students can earn up to twelve points on the end-of-year state assessment, underscoring the importance of effective writing instruction. By equipping teachers with these tools and insights, CPSD aims to enhance student performance and ensure a smooth transition to the new writing assessment framework.
