John Wesley “John the Baptist” Henry celebrated his 107th birthday Sept. 30, marking more than a century of life and history in Madison County.
Born in Madison County on Sept. 30, 1919, Henry has witnessed more than 100 years of change while building a legacy of military service, community involvement, faith and music.
In 1942, Henry enlisted in the U.S. military and was deployed to Europe in support of the Allied war effort during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to the Canton area. Two years later, in 1947, he married Catherine Griffin.
Henry went on to build a life rooted in the Canton community. He worked for Presto Manufacturing, Canton Public Schools and the City of Canton as an essential service employee.
Faith and music also have played important roles in his life. Known affectionately as “John the Baptist,” Henry served as a deacon at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Canton Southernairs for more than 60 years.
His family has grown across the generations. When the Mississippi Senate honored Henry in 2025, Senate Resolution 138 noted that he had 12 children, 38 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
The Mississippi Senate formally recognized Henry’s life and service in April 2025, honoring the Canton World War II veteran for his contributions to his country and community.
At 107, Henry remains a remarkable living connection to more than a century of Madison County history.
The Canton-Madison County Historical Society wishes Henry a happy 107th birthday and expresses its appreciation for his military service and many decades of contributions to the Canton community.
