Courthouse Lawn

By Courtney Warren

The Canton Courthouse grounds recently got a facelift, thanks to the efforts of the Madison County Board of Supervisors.

The sidewalks were reconstructed, and the old sidewalks were removed, with new concrete poured to make new sidewalks around the square.

Another huge improvement was the installation of an irrigation system.

According to Madison County Administrator Shelton Vance, “we contoured the property to provide for proper drainage and installed sod.”

This project has been considered for several years.

Madison County Supervisor Sheila Jones said, “That courthouse and the lawn are a treasure to the community and to the county. We need to make sure it lasts for future generations.”

The board will be considering restrictions after seeing the impact of the fall flea market. Right now, the only new restriction is that no tent stakes can be used and no motorized vehicles on the sod.

“We are going to ensure all of the Canton traditions remain intact,” said Jones.

Nothing official has been decided for the Christmas events, however, restrictions will be in place to protect all of the hard work done by the county.
